Talking Points: ObamaCare

Health care is more expensive under ObamaCare

  • ObamaCare does not offer the affordability Obama promised.
  • The average cost of a family insurance policy increased 9 percent last year.
  • The cost of single employee coverage increased 8 percent.
  • By 2021, average family health insurance premiums will equal half of median household income, according to a recent study.
  • If trends persist, family premiums will exceed median household income in 2033.

ObamaCare limits Americans’ health care choices

  • Six million retirees will lose prescription drug coverage as a result of ObamaCare.
  • ObamaCare limits the use of cost-reducing Health Savings Accounts, affecting more than 20 million Americans.
  • As many as 20 million Americans could lose their employer-based insurance, as businesses find it cheaper to pay government penalties.

Under ObamaCare, government spending will skyrocket

  • Starting in 2013, spending on Social Security and health care programs will grow faster than nominal GDP.
  • Medicaid spending will also shoot up rapidly, doubling in 10 years.
  • ObamaCare will cost the federal government $1.76 trillion over 10 years, in addition to added Medicaid costs on individual states.

ObamaCare is a drag on our economy

  • ObamaCare’s mandates and regulations put added costs on struggling businesses and job creators.
  • This makes it harder for businesses to hire new workers and grow the economy.
  • New Medicare taxes and taxes on medical devices threaten economic growth and could result in job losses.

ObamaCare expands the federal bureaucracy and encroaches on individual liberty

  • Under ObamaCare, Americans have less say in their own health care.
  • Government bureaucrats will be empowered to make an increasing number of health care decisions.
  • Americans who decide to forego health insurance will be penalized by the government.
  • ObamaCare robs states of the ability to craft health care reforms for themselves.

ObamaCare is unpopular and Americans think it was a mistake

  • ObamaCare is the president’s signature legislation, but most Americans oppose it.
  • Nationally, 50 percent say ObamaCare is a “bad thing.”
  • In swing states, 53 percent say it’s a “bad thing.” Only 38 percent say it’s a “good thing” that Congress passed ObamaCare.
  • ObamaCare clearly hurts Obama’s reelection prospects.
  • Two thirds of Americans want to ditch all or part of ObamaCare.

Administrations Regulatory Review is Complete 2/12/2012

654 Rules Will Be Repealed, 1100 Updated

CARSON CITY, NV – Speaking at the Chamber’s Directions 2012 event in Reno this morning, Governor Sandoval announced the results of his administration’s regulatory review. In his first executive order as Governor, Sandoval imposed a one-year freeze on all regulations and required the Cabinet to thoroughly review the entire regulatory framework of the state.

During the freeze, all regulations were reviewed to determine if they were still necessary, to identify any adverse impact on business, to clarify language and address duplication or inconsistencies, and to determine if the public value outweighed the cost of the regulation itself. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., on Tuesday relaunched his “no budget, no pay” proposal to withhold paychecks from Congress if it fails to finalize a budget resolution by the beginning of the fiscal year.

Heller first proposed the measure in July as a protest against the inability of Congress to pass a budget since 2009. Although the idea hasn’t moved forward in the Senate, it received the backing on Tuesday of the No Labels campaign.

How They Voted

* The House passed a bill on Tuesday that would extend Social Security tax cuts, extend unemployment benefits and allow the construction of a “shovel-ready” Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that would put thousands of Americans to work as well as reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.  There’s also a provision in the bill that would require recipients of taxpayer-subsidized extended unemployment benefits to be drug-tested.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, Nevada Democrat, voted against the bill.  Reps. Joe Heck and Mark Amodei, Nevada Republicans, voted for it.
